Our Checkpoints

Offroad Finnmark extends over large parts of the west and mid Finnmark county and sometimes in Troms county. On the way our riders will come across different checkpoints, consisting of lodges, village houses, schools and wildlife checkpoints. Below, we will tell you more about our most widely used places.

Mountain lodges

Several of our checkpoints is at mountain lodges. The mountain houses in Finnmark were established by the state, mainly because the people of the state, such as priests, sheriffs, doctors etc. would have a place to rest when they run their errands in the region. It is about 3 miles between these lodges, the time it took to walk on foot, with horse and wagon or reindeers. Several of the lodges are also open for public today and welcomes guests summer and winter. Today, the guests consist of people on snowmobiles, cross country skiers, bikers, hunters and tourists.

Checkpoint Suolovuopmi

Suolovuopmi Fjellstue was established in 1843 as the first mountain lodge financed by the government. It has been operating as a mountain lodge ever since its establishment. The demand for accommodation was necessary for those who transported mail in the region. Fjellposten, a route which began in 1799, went from Hammerfest on the coast of Finnmark to Haparanda in swedish Bottenviken in the winter. The mountain lodge is located along the old route to Kautokeino and is not longer financed by the government.

Checkpoint Suossjavri

Šuoššjávri (Northern Sami) or Suossjavri (Norwegian) is a village in Karasjok municipality. It is located in the western part of the municipality, just within the border to Kautokeino and along the National Road 92 which links the places Kautokeino and Karasjok. The owner of the lodge, Anne Ragnhild Balto, are loved by all bikers. She has saved many from breaking races in her care. With her love, wonderful food and warm sauna she get the motivation and energy back for those who need it. Daughter Alice will eventually take over the lodge. She is a five time finisher in Offroad Finnmark.

Checkpoint Mollisjok

Mollisjok Fjellstue is far off the highway and our most remote checkpoint. It is located in the middle of Finnmark county on the Finnmark plateu. The mountain lodge is idyllically situated beside the river Jiesjohka, which originates from Finnmark’s largest lake Jiesjavri, 10 km north of the lodge. The standard of the lodge is simple. 4-person cabins with wood burning stoves for heating. The cabins have cooking facilities self servicec but we recommend the lovely food you can by at Mollisjok. A minicraft plant, operating since 1988, supplies the lodge with electricity, but not enough for room heating.

Checkpoint Jotka

Jotka fjellstue is our most used checkpoint. It is checkpoint for DNB OF150, SmartDok OF300 and Ishavskraft OF700. The checkpoint is the closest to Alta, and is often the last stop before the finish. The mountain lodge is located idyllically to the southeast of Joatkajávrrit lake. Jotka Fjellstue is one of the state’s three lodges located on the old road between Alta and Karasjok. The lodge has over 30 beds and a restaurant. The serving of hot food at this checkpoint is often mentioned as one of the highlights of our riders, as it is often late in the race and you may not expect it in a place that is not available for a car.

Checkpoint Masi

Masi is a village in Kautokeino municipality in Finnmark. The inhabitants have a population of around 350, of which about 98% are Sami. The place name is derived from Mázejohkka, which is the name of a river that runs through the village. Checkpoint Masi is one of our most commonly used checkpoints on SmartDok OF300 and Ishavskraft OF700, and is a natural hub for many of the trails on the Finnmark plateu. We use the public school wich provides opportunities for sleep and a long-awaited shower. Good overview also makes it perfect for private support.
