Jotka Fjellstue is a mountain lodge, one of the last 3 lodges in Norway financed by the government. The mountain lodges were established in 1840 mainly because the people of the state, such as priests, sheriffs, doctors etc. should have a place to stay when they run their errands in the region. The distance between the lodges was set to 3 miles, the time it took to walk on foot or by horse with wagon. Reindeer was also used for transportation.<\/p>\n

All buildings in Finnmark were burned down in 1945, just before World War 2 ended. Only churches and a few other buildings escaped the flames. Jotka mountain lodge was one of the buildings that still stands and still has its old settlements. The oldest houses are from 1878. Jotka Fjellstue is actively used by bikers and is a perfect destination for a long day trip from Alta. In the lodge you can order food in advance, accommodation, sauna and a bath outside. In wintertime, the lodge is used as a pit stop for people on snowmobiles, cross country skiers and sled dog mushers. It is a popular stop for a coffee or tea.<\/p>\n
